How to combine multiple sections in Canvas
Faculty interested in combining multiple sections on Canvas should submit a request through the CR Keep Teaching course found in Canvas.
Please do not submit the request through this ticketing help system.
General Information regarding combining multiple sections:
- Canvas shells cannot be combined after student work has been submitted to a class - this should be done before a course is published.
- It's best if sections are merged before any course materials are added to any of the sections. If work has already been added to one of the sections, the shell containing your work must be designated as the parent shell or you will lose access to that material.
- When combining sections, all but one of the course shells to be combined will be removed from your dashboard; only one section will remain (the parent section).
-
When you submit your request, make sure that your "parent" course is the course that you want all classes in - this is what shows up on student dashboards.
- Course names should reflect the name in the course catalog - we cannot change combined section course shells to a different name than what is listed.
- Combining course shells should be a reason of teaching pedagogy and not due to convenience.
Once you submit your request, your class sections will be merged within 2 working days. If you have any questions or concerns about combining sections, please submit a help ticket directed to Canvas/Online Learning.
