How to setup an Incomplete in Canvas
Faculty can complete and submit the Incomplete Grade Request form (found with Admissions and Records), which provides students an opportunity to complete academic work due to an unforeseeable, emergency, and justifiable reason. More information can be found in Redwoods Community College District AP4221.
Incompletes cannot be created by faculty alone and need to submit a ticket with the completed form to Distance Education to setup the incomplete process. The incomplete process allows students to continue coursework in a closed term by creating a new section. Students will have access to the same course and see it on their Canvas dashboard.
Step 1: Find and complete Incomplete Grade Request
The form can be found with Admissions and Records. Both the student and faculty member must sign the document and fill it completely. Failure to complete the form completely may delay the process.
Step 2: Submit Incomplete Grade Request to Admissions and Records
You must submit this document to Admissions and Records as they must have it on file.
Step 3: Submit Incomplete Grade Request to Distance Education
You must notify Distance Education by submitting a ticket by going to Support : College Of The Redwoods Support. Submit your ticket to Canvas/Online Learning. If you do not receive a confirmation from Distance Education that your request is completed, please submit a new ticket/request.
Step 4: Notify your student regarding access and completion date
Distance Education will contact you regarding your incomplete in Canvas. It is the responsibility of the faculty member to notify the student. If there are concerns or issues, please submit a new ticket.
Important Notes
- The incomplete process shows up as a new section in your course - if you submit multiple incompletes, you may see multiple sections within a course.
- No changes have to be done by the instructor. Creating the new section will override previous assignment dates.
- Do not extend the start and end dates of a course to provide your student(s) more time as an incomplete - doing so would allow all students to continue to access your course.
